Lately….

Little important nothings of the goings on at the Walker Residence. Like the summer nights that gradually start a little earlier, now midsummer has passed. It’s really noisy with crickets and cicadas chirping and buzzing like mad.

Charley adorned with her favorite jewel is looking out for those cheeky raccoons!

And what a glorious feeling it was, to safe together with a neighborhood boy and two police officers 11 little ducklings who had fallen in the sewer. Mama Wood Duck had alerted us with running in circles around the grate of the sewer. Amazingly, once we started hauling up the little babies, she settled herself underneath a bush in the garden calling to and collecting her brood.  The long limbed lady in hat is me, the handle of the net was a bit short and my arms were by far the longest…

Summer baking..a lovely lemon pie and an upside down apple cake.

Experimenting with markers…that’s actually quite hard to work with!

Summer reading consists of revisiting classics like ‘Jane Eyre’ and ‘Middle March’ .But I also enjoy this delightful 1930 children’s book ever so much! I am certainly of a later date but it still brings happy memories!

Youngest Mr. Walker was here for a week, and Charley enjoyed going for drives even more!

And I always enjoy watching water striders. They have so many different names. In Dutch they are called ‘skate riders’ .

But the Stars of Summer in my opinion are these elegant water damsels.

Love and Liefs, Johanna

  1. What a delightful summer. That children’s book looks interesting. I am going to find it and read it 🙂

  2. Thanks, Johanna, for sharing those moments of yout life. 🙂 I’m glad you were able to save the ducklings.
    Have a wonderful week,
    Pit

  3. Oh, we both have summer moments on our minds, Johanna! How exciting to be part of helping those ducklings–you’re their hero! Little things mean a lot . . .

  4. Oh well done rescuing those chicks- that’s such an uplifting story. Also read Swallows and Amazons back in the day. Just remember the girl has a funny name!

  5. I love Swallows and Amazons – I must find it and read it again! How exciting! Not only are you a brilliant illustrator but an animal rescuer extraordinaire! That photo of the tiny chick is so cute! In England, Water Striders are called Pond Skaters! Hope you’re keeping cool and Charley keeps those raccoons in order! What a lovely necklace she has!

  6. So happy the ducklings are safe! I am a little melancholy that midsummer has passed and plan to enjoy the rest of the daylight even as it shortens. Happy August to you!!

  7. What a classic summer you’re having! Crickets and cicadas and long evenings and good reading. Now throwing in a duck rescue is something new! As is Charley’s stunning necklace. I was thinking the duck rescue could be a nice children’s book! Good for you for having long arms!

  8. I do love the sounds of summer, and of course of being able to have the house open more, so we can enjoy them. The frogs start quite early in the year giving us evening concerts. We also enjoyed the barred owls for a time, but they have moved on it seems. Now we have cicadas still buzzing late into the evening. Thanks for the round up of your days.

  9. I third the first comment. It does my heart good to see you in the rescue of ducklings. It’s another moment of knowing there is real good in the world. This was such a lovely post. Please don’t let that sweet dog find those raccoons. It won’t end well. 😦 Love the lighted collar. Thank you for sharing these moments.

    • I am Happy you liked it so much, Marlene! And do not worry about Chalrey, she only chases wild life and never attacks. She had hold of a squirrel once and she spat it out right away and coughed and sneezed with disgust for the longest time. The squirrel was unharmed high in a tree, counting its lucky stars ;o)

  10. Oh, I’m so happy that you saved these little ducklings, Johanna. And police officers helped? That’s nice! I’m quite sure that in Estonia they would say that it’s not their problem.
But I was thinking if all 11 ducklings fell in the sewer, then these sewers are so dangerous. 😦 Imagine how many could fall there. And there aren’t always you nearby who can help them.
But anyway, it’s a wonderful post again. I’m little sad that midsummer is passed and summer has gone so quickly. But as I like these dark August nights and I love autumn as well, I think that even one good thing is coming to the end, the other good thing will start.
Hope you have wonderful August, Johanna! 🙂

    • Here in Cincinnati we have torrential rainfalls, and there is large system of basins, gutters and sewers to avoid flooding. I thought I knew about rain after living in The Netherlands but these rainstorms were new to us. Unfortunately , it does happen that little duckling fall into it, especially wood ducks, since the mama travels with the ducklings once they are hatched. Traffic will stop completely when mama ducks and brood cross the roads, so sweet! People do look out for them since they are a bit rare and actually the police men hold a record amongst themselves who saved the most ducklings by the end of the summer. Ha, the count was on 6 and of course with 11 we beat that easily. And I know that American police officers come in the news at their worst lately but generally they are very helpful and patient. it took more than an hour to safe them!
And I will cary on through August’s heat and look forward to fall as well;o) Love to you, Hanna!

  11. The water strider has the look of a drone about it! Drones are scary things though and water striders are not. What a lovely jewel Charley is wearing.

  12. I will echo Ms Graves above here and shout it into my megaphone, “you are awesome”! Add duckling saviour to your long list of talents. Thank goodness for long lists and long arms. Those poor babies, mom must have been so frantic. Can you put chicken wire under the grate so they won’t fall in again? I’m going to check nearby ones tomorrow.
All your photo’s are so lovely. I’m drawn to the light and content. It’s a snapshot of contentment that makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I’m back to work tomorrow after hosting Alys and my cousin from Ottawa too. What a whirlwind summer I’ve had, glorious! I see and your crew are relishing these shining moments too, blessings J xo ❤ k
